Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid confronted and shoved a reporter after heated words were exchanged in the locker room, prompting an NBA investigation into the incident.
On Saturday night, following the Philadelphia 76ers’ loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Joel Embiid reportedly had a confrontational exchange with Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes. The All-Star center, who has yet to play this season, appeared visibly upset after Hayes referenced Embiid’s late brother and son, both named Arthur, in recent articles questioning Embiid’s professionalism and fitness post-Paris Olympics.
As reporters entered the locker room, Embiid approached Hayes, issuing a stern warning: “The next time you bring up my dead brother and my son again, you are going to see what I’m going to do to you and I’m going to have to live with the consequences,” he stated. He continued, adding multiple profanities, and refused Hayes’s apology, responding, “That’s not the first time.” When Hayes remarked, “But you do,” Embiid raised his voice, eventually shoving Hayes before Sixers’ PR staff intervened.
PR Response and NBA Investigation
Following the incident, Sixers’ PR staff attempted to minimize media exposure by relocating Tyrese Maxey’s interview outside the locker room and requesting reporters avoid coverage of the altercation. Despite these efforts, Embiid was unfazed, stating, “They can do whatever they want. I don’t give a [expletive].”
The NBA quickly confirmed that it would launch an investigation to assess whether disciplinary action against Embiid is warranted.
Ongoing Tension
Tensions between Embiid and Hayes had been brewing before Saturday. At a press conference on Friday, Embiid referred to Hayes as “Marcus, whatever his name is,” addressing recent criticisms of his absence and conditioning. In a recent column, Hayes questioned Embiid’s dedication, even suggesting fans deserve refunds for missed games. Embiid responded to these criticisms, expressing frustration over his commitment to the Philadelphia 76ers and stating, “I’ve done way too much for this … city to be treated like this.”
Uncertain Timeline for Embiid’s Return
It remains unclear when Embiid will return to play, with many awaiting the results of the NBA’s investigation. This recent incident has intensified scrutiny around Embiid’s role with the 76ers and the ongoing discourse on athlete-press relations.
