Villa Draped in Wooden Blinds for Sun Protection and Breezy Ambience
India – Encircled by wooden blinds, this villa is designed to shield from the sun while allowing natural breezes and expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
This two-story villa sits on a sprawling 1,400-square-meter plot in the suburbs of Mumbai, India. Originally a farmstead from the 1990s, the building featured small windows and lacked any connection to the outdoor scenery.
The design team decided to preserve the original beam-column-slab structure while opening up the entire wall system of the floor plan. The ground floor is accentuated by large stone slabs, while the upper structure is enveloped in a layer of wooden blinds. These wooden blinds allow natural light and ventilation to flow into the interior spaces while maximizing visibility to the surrounding environment.
The main materials used in construction include stone, wood, and plaster, contributing to a rustic, natural ambiance. The living and relaxation areas are situated under a large canopy, seamlessly connected to the garden and pool, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The interior strikes a balance between modernity and tradition, with open slatted railings that enhance the sense of space. The windows have been enlarged to increase the connection with nature and bring in more light. The bedrooms feature balconies on two sides, optimizing views of the surrounding landscape. A cozy relaxation corner has been incorporated into the sleeping quarters, adding a sense of privacy and comfort.
