The World’s Most Romantic Road Reopens After 12 Years
After 12 years of closure for repairs, the world’s most romantic road, Via dell’Amore, has reopened to visitors. This picturesque pathway, known as the “Lovers’ Lane”.
Via dell’Amore, celebrated by global travel magazines as the “world’s most romantic road,” has historically drawn couples and travelers from all corners of the globe. The road officially reopened on July 27, following extensive repairs and enhancements aimed at making it “safer than ever” for tourists.
Originally closed in 2012 due to a severe landslide that injured four Australian tourists, local authorities have since undertaken significant restoration efforts. Now, as visitors stroll along this romantic path, they are immersed in breathtaking scenery, nestled between mountains and sea, adorned with statues and benches depicting love gods.
Constructed in the 1920s, Via dell’Amore quickly became an idyllic dating spot where couples could savor romantic moments amidst nature. The name “Lovers’ Lane” stems from the heartwarming love stories of local residents. Visitors to Via dell’Amore often feel transported to another world, where time slows down, and the worries of modern life fade away. It is an ideal setting for couples to create cherished memories, from gentle hand-holding and sweet kisses to whispered words of love against the backdrop of crashing waves.
Via dell’Amore is also a treasure trove of cultural and historical significance. Stories of love and fidelity have been passed down through generations, with each rock and wall imbued with unique memories and tales, making the journey along the path a deeply emotional experience.
The restoration project, which cost 22 million euros, involved reinforcing the pathway with steel belts and nets to secure the rocks above and below it.
Each season brings its own unique beauty to Via dell’Amore. In spring, blooming flowers create a vibrant natural tapestry. Summer offers clear blue skies and golden sunshine shimmering on the sea. Autumn brings a romantic palette of red and gold foliage, while winter’s chilly air and mystical fog add a serene and enchanting atmosphere.
Visitors can explore the starting point of Via dell’Amore and the entrance to the village of Riomaggiore for a fee of 5 euros. Children under three and people with disabilities can enter for free.
Reopening in time for the European summer, Via dell’Amore is expected to attract a substantial number of visitors from around the world. To prevent overcrowding, local authorities have implemented a ticketing system requiring visitors to book tickets online or purchase them at designated ticket booths. The pathway is open in two time slots: 9 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 7 PM. This system helps manage the flow of tourists, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a memorable experience without being overwhelmed by crowds.
