“The Frog” Explores Ordinary Lives Upended by Sudden Calamity
Netflix Korea’s latest thriller, “The Frog,” delves into the lives of ordinary people, or “frogs,” who are abruptly confronted with catastrophic events. Inspired by the Korean adage “A carelessly thrown stone can kill a frog,” the series promises a gripping exploration of unforeseen misfortune.
“The Frog” is an eight-episode mystery thriller starring Kim Yun-Seok as Young-ha, a bed-and-breakfast owner seeking solace in the remote woods. His peaceful existence is shattered when a mysterious guest, Sung-ah (played by Go Min-si), arrives, bringing turmoil into his life.
Directed by Mo Wan-il, the creative mind behind the acclaimed romantic thriller “The World of the Married,” the series presents a unique narrative that intrigued Mo despite its unconventional story. At a press conference on Wednesday, Mo shared his enthusiasm for the project: “The script presented such an unusual concept that I initially doubted its feasibility as a series. However, the compelling way the characters confront their uncertain futures captivated me and ultimately motivated me to bring it to life.”
This series also marks the return of veteran actor Kim Yun-seok to television after a 17-year hiatus. Known for his roles in popular films like “Tazza: The High Rollers” and “The Yellow Sea,” Kim explained his decision to join a series was influenced by the evolving trends in entertainment. “Series have become a genre of their own, reflecting the changing times. As actors, it’s important for us to adapt,” Kim said.
Kim also expressed his excitement about the global reach of Netflix, which allows for broader communication and expression across different languages. He highlighted his deep connection to “The Frog” due to its balanced portrayal of both the instigator and the victim of calamities. “The series offers a reflective look at society and our personal experiences, showing how individuals cope and persevere through crisis,” he added.
