Taylor Swift Ticket Prices in the UK Surge by Nearly 2,000% Following Vienna Show Cancellations
In a dramatic turn of events, Taylor Swift fans have driven ticket prices for her upcoming UK shows through the roof, following the cancellation of three nights of “The Eras Tour” in Austria. The decision to cancel was made after authorities uncovered a terrorist plot targeting the concerts, leading to a surge in demand for her London performances.
Taylor Swift was set to perform on August 8th, 9th, and 10th at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria, to an audience of approximately 170,000 fans. However, the shows were abruptly canceled due to security concerns after the terrorist threat was detected. Fans who had purchased tickets for the Vienna shows will receive refunds within ten days. Many of these fans are now redirecting their plans to attend her concerts in the UK, resulting in a scramble for tickets.
According to the Daily Mail, the cancellation has caused ticket prices for Swift’s London shows at Wembley Stadium to skyrocket on resale sites like Viagogo, Vividseats, StubHub, and Gigsberg. Initially, tickets were priced between £58 for seats with limited visibility and £110 for standard seating. However, on resale platforms, the lowest prices have now surged to £416, with some tickets being listed for as much as £6,515, depending on the location.
The Guardian reports that ticket prices for Taylor Swift’s London shows have increased by 30% on the resale market following the Vienna cancellations and are now nearly 2,000% higher than the original prices.
In addition to soaring ticket prices, the cancellation of the Vienna shows has led to a spike in Google searches for “Taylor Swift London tickets” originating from the Austrian capital. CoinPoker also notes that the demand for flights from Vienna to London has caused a 38% increase in round-trip airfare on August 14th and 15th, just before Swift’s first Wembley concert.
Taylor Swift is scheduled to perform five shows at London’s Wembley Stadium from August 15th to 20th, each expected to draw around 90,000 fans. In light of the security concerns that led to the Vienna cancellations, the London Metropolitan Police have confirmed that security will be significantly heightened for these performances.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police reassured the public, stating, “London hosts numerous major events each year, attracting millions of visitors who enjoy safe and enjoyable experiences.” They emphasized that there is no indication that the issue under investigation in Austria will impact the upcoming events in London, and that they will continue to monitor the situation closely.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also addressed the situation, affirming that the concerts will proceed as planned. He noted, “We have extensive experience in overseeing these events and never become complacent. Lessons have been learned from the tragic attack at Manchester Arena. The police are working closely, not just with City Hall, but with councils and concert organizers.”
Khan added, “I’m sure Vienna had its reasons for canceling Taylor Swift’s concert. We will continue to work closely with the police to ensure the concert can go ahead safely.”
Taylor Swift’s series of concerts in London is projected to generate around £300 million for the city’s economy, making it a highly anticipated and financially significant event despite the recent security challenges.
