The Big 3’s Disappointing Debut
The Phoenix Suns are looking to bounce back in Year 2 with their All-Star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, following a disappointing inaugural season. The so-called “Big 3” faced significant challenges last season, culminating in a first-round playoff exit after a 49-33 regular season record. Now, with a new coach and an improved supporting cast, the Suns are optimistic about their chances for success.
Reflecting on Last Season
Gathering in downtown Phoenix five months after their playoff elimination by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Suns are ready for a fresh start. While Booker embraced the new beginning, he acknowledged that the disappointment from last season still lingers. “I think going out in the fashion that we did, it’s something that you just don’t want to blow by it and act like it never happened,” Booker stated. He views the experience as motivation, emphasizing that “experience is the best teacher.”
Coaching Changes and Roster Revamp
This offseason, the Suns made significant changes, including the hiring of new head coach Mike Budenholzer. A native of Arizona, Budenholzer replaces Frank Vogel, who spent just one season with the team. Budenholzer previously led the Milwaukee Bucks to victory over the Suns in the 2021 NBA Finals, creating a sense of urgency for Phoenix to finally secure a championship, having reached the Finals three times without a title.
Budenholzer commented, “It’s all talk at this stage. I’m just like any other coach — trying to get my team ready for practice tomorrow.” The Suns also strengthened their backcourt by signing veteran point guards Tyus Jones and Monte Morris, along with veteran center Mason Plumlee to back up Jusuf Nurkic. Jones, who averaged 7.3 assists and only one turnover last season, signed a one-year deal worth $3 million, a bargain seen as a win for the Suns.
The Summer of Preparation
Durant and Booker had a productive summer as key members of the U.S. basketball team that won a gold medal in Paris. Despite turning 36, Durant has shown remarkable durability, while Booker, entering his 10th NBA season at just 27, is now more aware of the importance of maintaining his health. “I’m always a sponge,” Booker said, reflecting on the various routines of his teammates, including Durant.
Bradley Beal’s Fresh Start
Bradley Beal, who struggled with injuries and adapting to his role last season, is eager for a fresh start with the revamped roster. Averaging 21 points per game despite these challenges, Beal expressed excitement about the upcoming season. “I feel ecstatic right now… Now, I get to do that. Everybody’s acclimated with each other, so we’re past that phase. Now we can just hit the ground running.”
Aiming High in Year 2
With their All-Star trio back and bolstered by a new coach and improved roster, the Phoenix Suns are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season. The focus is on learning from past disappointments and using that experience as motivation to achieve their long-awaited championship aspirations.
