Cecconi’s Reinstatement and New Role
Slade Cecconi has been recalled by the Arizona Diamondbacks after a stint in Triple-A Reno, where he was optioned on July 11. Now back with the team, Cecconi is poised to embrace his new role as a relief pitcher. “Torey (Lovullo) called me and informed me of this plan. We have some players returning, and this is an opportunity for me,” Cecconi shared.
Team Changes Prompting the Move
Impressive Triple-A Performance
In his time at Triple-A, Cecconi made three appearances as a reliever, totaling five innings with an impressive performance—allowing just two runs and striking out seven batters. His recent outing featured a remarkable pitch speed of 99 mph. “News spreads quickly when you throw hard,” he remarked, emphasizing how his increased velocity bodes well for his shift to relief, where he can hone in on his preferred secondary pitches.
Comparison to Wade Davis
Lovullo has drawn comparisons between Cecconi and Wade Davis, who became an elite pitcher after transitioning to a relief role. In his first outing back with the Diamondbacks, Cecconi excelled against batters, limiting opponents to a mere .152 batting average, showcasing his effectiveness as a relief option.
Yilber Diaz’s Struggles
With Slade Cecconi back in action, the Diamondbacks look to strengthen their bullpen and make a push for the postseason, capitalizing on Cecconi’s potential as a reliable relief pitcher.
