Shiloh Jolie-Pitt Officially Drops Father’s Surname: A New Chapter Begins
Shiloh, the daughter of Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has officially dropped her father’s surname. She is now legally recognized as Shiloh Nouvel Jolie, marking a significant change in her identity that has drawn attention from fans and media alike.
According to a report by TMZ on August 19, the Los Angeles Superior Court approved Shiloh’s request to change her name without requiring a hearing. The process, however, wasn’t without delays. In late July, the court had postponed a hearing on her name change due to incomplete background checks, causing some temporary uncertainty about the status of her request.
Peter Levine, Shiloh’s attorney, explained to People magazine that such delays are common in these cases. “The postponement was a routine matter,” Levine said, noting that the court clerks are required to thoroughly check the records of all applicants seeking a name change. Due to an administrative error, Shiloh’s hearing was rescheduled. Under California law, before a judge approves a name change, the applicant must publish a notice in a local newspaper. Shiloh complied with this requirement, choosing the Los Angeles Times, where her request was published in the legal section on June 17, 24, July 1, and 8, according to Page Six.
Shiloh initiated the process of changing her surname shortly after her 18th birthday on May 27. She independently hired a lawyer to assist her in this legal matter. A week later, sources close to Brad Pitt shared with People that the actor was deeply saddened by his daughter’s decision. “Shiloh’s choice to drop the ‘Pitt’ surname is a painful reminder to Brad that he has lost a connection with his child. It’s not an easy thing for him to come to terms with. He still loves and misses his kids,” the source said.
Shiloh is the first of the Jolie-Pitt children to have her new name legally recognized. Her siblings have taken different paths regarding their surnames. Zahara, 19, and Vivienne, 16, have publicly chosen not to use their father’s surname but have not yet sought legal recognition. Meanwhile, Maddox, 23, is believed to have already changed his surname unofficially. There are rumors that Pax Thien, 21, also uses only his mother’s surname. Knox, 16, remains the only child who has not publicly expressed his stance on the matter.
Shiloh, originally named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, was born in 2006 in Namibia, Africa, while Angelina Jolie was engaged in humanitarian work as a United Nations ambassador. The couple chose to give birth outside the U.S. to avoid intense media scrutiny. After Jolie and Pitt’s divorce in 2016, Shiloh and her siblings primarily lived with their mother in Los Angeles. Besides her striking resemblance to her famous parents, Shiloh has gained attention for her talent in contemporary dance.
This name change marks a new chapter in Shiloh’s life, further highlighting the complex dynamics within one of Hollywood’s most famous families.
