Review: Miss Night and Day – a super cute movie for the summer
2024 seems to be the year of rom-coms from South Korea, with hits like Queen of Tears, Lovely Runner, and Doctor Slump captivating audiences. Amidst these high-profile releases, Miss Night and Day (Cô Ấy Ngày Và Đêm) stands out as a refreshing breeze, perfect for cooling off during the summer heat.
A Hidden Gem
Premiering on June 15th simultaneously on JTBC and Netflix, Miss Night and Day began with a modest 4% average rating, which gradually rose with each episode. By the end of its run, the final episode achieved a peak rating of nearly 12%—a commendable figure for Korean dramas today.
Despite its popularity in South Korea, Miss Night and Day hasn’t garnered the same buzz in Vietnam. Its viewership and discussion metrics are notably lower compared to Sweet Home (Season 3), which was criticized for its unsatisfying conclusion.
In Korea, the series has been praised for its engaging and humorous content, highlighted by the impressive performances of Jung Eun Ji and Lee Jung Eun. However, it hasn’t reached the same level of excitement in Vietnam.
A Laugh-Out-Loud Story
Miss Night and Day follows Lee Mi Jin (played by Jung Eun Ji), a 28-year-old who has failed her civil service exam eight times. After her eighth failure, Mi Jin’s frustration peaks when she is scammed out of her savings by a fraudulent job placement agency.
Desperate to escape her life, Mi Jin wishes to become someone else. Miraculously, she wakes up in the body of a 50-year-old woman, Lim Soon (played by Lee Jung Eun). Unfortunately, she can only revert to her younger self at night.
In her new, older guise, Mi Jin impersonates her missing aunt Lim Soon to secure a job at the Seohan Prosecutor’s Office. There, she becomes an intern under the supervision of the talented yet difficult prosecutor, Gye Ji Woong (Choi Jin Hyuk).
As Ji Woong interacts with the older Lim Soon and the younger Mi Jin, he becomes inexplicably drawn to both, setting the stage for a series of humorous and poignant encounters.
In addition to the comedic transformation, the series delves into a subplot involving a case related to the disappearance of Lim Soon and Ji Woong’s mother over 20 years ago. This mystery adds a compelling layer to the narrative, connecting Mi Jin and Ji Woong despite their seemingly disparate worlds.
Lovely, funny characters
One of the most interesting points of Her Day and Night is the impressive cast of main and supporting characters. Not only did they act well, they were also extremely enthusiastic in many scenes, making the audience laugh.
Besides veteran actress Lee Jung Eun, who has an excellent role playing aunt Lim Soon with the soul of a girl in her twenties, Jung Eun Ji also plays the role of an unstable girl Mi Jin with the desire to find a job like hers. idea. Mi Jin is not a “love-brained” female lead. She has always worked hard her whole life. Even though he spent 8 years studying for the civil service exam, he still tried to work without relying on his parents. When she was lucky enough to get a job at the prosecutor’s office, even though her boss “told her” to do difficult work, she still completed it well and received recognition for her abilities.
Choi Jin Hyuk plays prosecutor Ji Woong, handsome but difficult to the point of forcing his colleagues to go… for treatment for depression. Ready to “tease” colleagues to the point of quitting their jobs for… meaningless reasons. But the inside is so emotional that women can’t help but tremble.
Ko Won (Baek Seo Hoo) with his emotional scenes and actions of taking care of his aunt Lim Soon (Lee Jung Eun) made viewers laugh until their stomachs hurt. In particular, Ko Won seems to like aunt Lim Soon more than the pretty young girl Mi Jin in her 20s.
Her close friend Ga Young (Kim A Young) is always there to encourage and support Mi Jin during the most difficult times. Ready to be an “accomplice” and hide his identity for Mi Jin. Ga Young is also the “captain” who actively pairs Ji Woong and Mi Jin.
Investigator Byeong Duk, who was “pushed” into depression by Ji Woong. Being single and depressed, you always have to witness the strange emotional scenes of aunt Lim Soon and Ko Won. And the couple Ji Woong and Mi Jin.
Besides the humorous element, She Day and Night also partly reflects the reality of girls struggling to find jobs in Korea. This is clearly shown in the character Mi Jin. Even though she has many excellent office skills, she is still constantly failed and struggles to find a stable job.
It wasn’t until she became an aunt over 50 years old that she got a real job thanks to… incentives for the elderly.
While Miss Night and Day follows a familiar rom-com formula—incorporating humor, romance, mystery, and family dynamics—it remains a highly entertaining watch. The series may not break new ground, but it delivers a satisfying and engaging experience. Fans of the genre will find it delightful, offering a heartwarming conclusion that provides a sense of closure for beloved characters.
