President Biden Brought to Tears at the Democratic National Convention
President Joe Biden was visibly moved, shedding tears amid thunderous applause as he took the stage to deliver his farewell address at the Democratic National Convention.
On the evening of August 19, President Biden, accompanied by members of his family, including First Lady Jill Biden, attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. His daughter, Ashley Biden, introduced him before his speech.
As the 81-year-old President stepped onto the stage, thousands of attendees cheered, clapped, and chanted “We love you.” The President, who announced less than a month ago that he would not seek re-election, leaving the path clear for Vice President Kamala Harris, has just five months remaining in his term.
Biden embraced his daughter, wiped away tears with a handkerchief, and looked out at the audience, raising a clenched fist to demonstrate his resolve. Vice President Harris was also visibly moved, with tears in her eyes as she witnessed the emotional moment.
“I love you all,” Biden said from the podium. “Vice President Harris and I know there is still much to be done, but we are on the right path.”
In his speech, Biden criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as a “loser.” He urged Americans to “elect a prosecutor to the Oval Office instead of a convicted individual,” referencing Trump’s recent conviction by a New York jury, while noting Harris’s background as a prosecutor.
Biden also vowed to be the “best volunteer” for Harris’s campaign, expressing no regrets about stepping aside for his deputy.
“I love this job, but I love this country more,” Biden stated. “All the stories about me being angry at those who advised me to step back are simply untrue.”
Addressing the protests outside the Democratic Convention against Israel’s actions in Gaza, President Biden acknowledged the demonstrators’ concerns. “Too many innocent lives have been lost on both sides. It’s time to end this war,” he said.
The President affirmed that he has given his “very best” to America, summarizing over five decades of public service with a reflective comment: “I was once too young for the Senate, being elected as a senator before turning 30. Now, I’m too old to continue as President.”
After Biden’s 49-minute speech concluded, Vice President Harris joined him on stage, embracing him and expressing her admiration, saying, “I love you.”
Since Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate, the party’s chances of winning have improved significantly. Polls, fundraising efforts, and supporter turnout at campaign events indicate that Harris has reshaped the race for the White House.
When asked by reporters about his feelings after delivering the speech, Biden responded, “It was a moment to remember.”
Earlier, Vice President Harris also expressed her gratitude to President Biden during her remarks at the Democratic National Convention. “Thank you for your historic leadership, for a lifetime of dedication to our nation, and for all that you will continue to do. We are forever grateful,” she said.
