Norwegian Crown Prince’s Stepson Accused of Assaulting a Woman
Marius Borg Hoiby, the stepson of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been accused of assaulting a woman in Oslo. This incident has led Crown Princess Mette-Marit to postpone her trip to Paris for the Olympics.
Hoiby, 27, is suspected of “both physical and psychological” assault on a woman in her 20s in an Oslo apartment last weekend, according to Norwegian police. Authorities were called to the apartment early on August 4th to handle a dispute. Høiby was identified as the suspect and was arrested but released after approximately 30 hours. Police also conducted a blood test to determine if he had used drugs.
The identity of the woman has not been disclosed, but police confirmed that there is a relationship between the accused and the victim. The woman is reportedly not seriously injured and was discharged from the hospital on August 5th. Hoiby’s lawyer, Oyvind Bratlien, stated that his client has not been fully informed of the case details and has not yet provided an explanation on his behalf.
The Norwegian Royal Family has yet to comment on the matter. However, Crown Princess Mette-Marit has delayed her trip to the Paris Olympics, where she was expected to travel with Crown Prince Haakon. A spokesperson mentioned that the Crown Princess plans to depart later.
Historian Trond Noren Isaksen noted that this is the first time a member of the Norwegian Royal Family has faced such accusations.
Hoiby currently resides with his mother at the royal estate in Asker, southwest of Oslo. Crown Prince Haakon, the 51-year-old heir to the Norwegian throne, has raised Hoiby since he was three years old. Hoiby does not hold a royal title and has not participated in public royal activities since 2017.
The marriage of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon in 2001 was controversial, as she was a single mother with a troubled past. Her former boyfriend, Hoiby’s father, had been convicted of assault and drug possession. After their marriage, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit had two children: Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 20, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 18.
