New Thai Prime Minister Calls on Citizens to Revive the Economy
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, newly confirmed as the Prime Minister of Thailand, has pledged to rejuvenate the economy and is urging the nation to unite in this effort.
“As the leader of the government, I will work hand in hand with the parliament, embracing all ideas that contribute to the nation’s growth,” said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in her address today, following her appointment by King Maha Vajirusongkorn.
Paetongtarn is calling on the Thai people to collaborate in reviving an economy that has struggled to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Prime Minister alone cannot achieve this mission. I aspire to harness the strength of every generation and the full potential across our nation—from cabinet members, the ruling coalition, public servants, the private sector, to every citizen,” she emphasized.
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn’s father, acknowledged the challenges ahead. “Paetongtarn’s strength lies in her youthful energy, humility, and her willingness to seek help from anyone. Twenty-three years ago, she was behind me, but now, I stand behind her,” he remarked.
On August 16, the Thai House of Representatives elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the new Prime Minister. At 37, she is the youngest Prime Minister in the country’s history and the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold this office, following her father and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra.
Paetongtarn was chosen to succeed former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who was dismissed by the Thai Constitutional Court after appointing an individual with a criminal record to his cabinet.
