More than 12,000 Mini Cooper electric cars were recalled due to the risk of fire and explosion
Nearly all Mini Cooper SE electric vehicles produced between 2020 and 2024 are affected by BMW’s recent recall. The automaker announced a recall of 12,535 Mini Cooper SE electric cars, citing a possible battery or electrical system defect that could pose a significant mechanical hazard.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concludes that a lot of interest has been filed regarding electric Mini Coopers. The investigation revealed that system latches on these electric vehicles may be incorrectly installed or damaged, increasing the possibility of overheating while the vehicle is in motion.
Some reports indicate that overheating problems persist even when the vehicle is stopped or parked, raising concerns about the integrity of affected utility vehicles.
All Mini Cooper vehicles produced from 2020 to 2024 are included in this recall. To resolve the issue, affected vehicle owners should take their vehicle to an authorized dealer for a software update. The latest update will enhance the vehicle’s system manager with a new feature that detects electrical system errors and minimizes overheating by discharging the battery below 30% in an emergency situation.
The Mini Cooper EV, the brand’s first all-electric vehicle, was first launched in early 2020 and the new generation hit the market earlier this year. It is equipped with a powerful motor that delivers 215 horsepower and offers two battery options: a 40 kWh pack or a 54 kWh pack. This optional battery provides a minimum driving range of 386 km, catering to both urban commuters and long-distance drivers.
Prices for the Mini Cooper EV range from $28,900 to $37,150, depending on the version chosen.
With this recall affecting a significant number of vehicles, Mini Cooper EV owners are urged to act quickly to ensure the safe operation of their vehicles. This proactive approach by BMW can do its end cam for customer safety and maintain the integrity of its electric vehicle line.
