Decision on Starting Pitcher
The New York Mets have opted for David Peterson instead of José Quintana to start against the Atlanta Braves, despite Quintana’s impressive recent performance, which includes four wins and an ERA of 0.28 in his last five games. The decision stems from the team’s assessment of both pitchers’ form.
Management’s Assessment
Sources indicate that Mets management believes Peterson has been performing at least as well as, if not better than, Quintana, even if his statistics do not reflect it as prominently. While Quintana has benefited from excellent defensive support, contributing to his FIP of 2.76, Peterson boasts a lower FIP of 2.47, indicating he has faced similar misfortunes despite not receiving the same favorable conditions.
Manager’s Explanation
Manager Carlos Mendoza explained, “We consider various factors, such as matchups and what’s best for the team in this series. Peterson has been pitching well, despite some challenges in his last outing.”
Upcoming Game Schedule
Luis Severino will start for the Mets in the opening game of the series, with Peterson following on Wednesday. Quintana is set to take the mound in the series opener against Milwaukee on Friday. Notably, Peterson has had a breakout season with a record of 9-3 and an ERA of 3.08 since returning from surgery to repair damage.
Challenges Against Braves Lineup
However, Peterson might face limitations in his matchups against Braves hitters, especially given the number of right-handed batters in their lineup. Peterson stated, “I don’t think it changes much because I frequently face right-handed hitters. I’m familiar with these hitters and know what I need to do to succeed.”
