Manchester United: Worrying Weaknesses for the Start of the 2024-2025 Season
Manchester United (M.U) are entering the 2024-2025 season with the goal of qualifying for the Champions League, but recent performances show that the team is facing many serious problems. Despite a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham in the opening match of the Premier League, the “Red Devils” still revealed many worrying weaknesses.
Poor finishing ability is the biggest problem: M.U has been unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities, with Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho frequently missing good chances. Coming into the match against Brighton, the team’s lack of sharpness in attack continued to be prominent, and M.U is currently the team that has missed the most chances in the Premier League with 6 times. Nottingham Forest and Tottenham are behind with 5 times.
Marcus Rashford Disappoints: In the last two games, Rashford has failed to have a single shot, and was substituted early in the defeat to Brighton. Rashford has also been ineffective in supporting the defense, with only 12 pressure attempts compared to teammates like Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes.
Casemiro (red shirt) appeared weak in the midfield of the “Red Devils”
Weak defense and center-backs: Casemiro, despite being a veteran defensive midfielder, has lost the necessary fitness and strength. This has led to the need to recruit Manuel Ugarte from PSG. In defense, Harry Maguire and Matthijs De Ligt have both been inconsistent, with many lapses in concentration leading to goals. Goalkeeper Andre Onana has faced an average of 12 shots per game, showing a lack of control from the defense.
Maguire has yet to create confidence in defence
Poor spirit: United have conceded six goals after the 90th minute since the 2022-23 season, with recent defeats to Man City and Brighton showing a lack of spirit and concentration. They have also failed to win in their last 14 Premier League away games when trailing, losing 12 and drawing just two.
Worrying away form: Under Erik ten Hag, United have won 16 and lost 17 away from Old Trafford, showing their fragility and vulnerability when playing away from home.
While there are positive signs such as Diogo Dalot’s improved performances and more effective pressing, the above issues are worrying fans as the season has only just begun. United need to quickly overcome these weaknesses if they are to realise their goal of qualifying for the Champions League and improve their overall form.
