Hip Hop pioneer Kurtis Blow hosted a Zoom meeting with fellow Hip Hop legends, including Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Melle Mel, Whodini’s Grandmaster Dee, and members of The Force MDs, to discuss support for the families affected by the tragic Bronx fire that took 17 lives. These leaders in the Hip Hop community expressed their sorrow and mobilized efforts to bring financial and emotional support to the victims’ families.
Blow highlighted Cardi B’s generosity in covering funeral costs for those who lost their lives. “Cardi B came forward… to pay for the funerals, which is incredible,” said Blow, thanking her for her compassion and action. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has also pledged $2 million to assist the families affected by the disaster.
Cardi B’s Heartfelt Response to the Bronx Tragedy
Bronx-native Cardi B, deeply moved by the tragedy, released a statement expressing her sympathy for the victims and their families. “I cannot begin to imagine the pain… but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help,” she shared. Cardi is also collaborating with the Mayor’s Fund to ensure that families’ immediate needs are met, showcasing her commitment to her community.
A Community Rallies for Relief
The fire on January 9 originated from an electric space heater in a Bronx duplex, leading to a blaze that spread smoke throughout the 19-story building. Many residents were trapped and struggled to escape due to the building’s layout and common false alarms. Despite firefighters’ rescue efforts, several victims perished from smoke inhalation, according to New York’s Chief Medical Examiner.
To further assist, Fat Joe, another Bronx-born artist, has partnered with the New York City Mayor’s Fund to raise additional funds. Fat Joe secured contributions from JAY-Z and DJ Khaled and reached out to other high-profile friends for support. He also hosted a special Hot 97 radio show to raise awareness and financial assistance, with participants like Remy Ma, French Montana, and Slick Rick lending their voices to the cause. “It’s critical that we continue to come together and uplift our Bronx brothers and sisters,” Fat Joe stated.
