Senga’s Readiness to Return
Kodai Senga is expressing his readiness to return to the New York Mets and is open to taking on a relief role if the team remains in playoff contention. After missing 102 games due to a shoulder injury, Senga made just one appearance on July 26, where he impressively struck out nine batters over 5⅓ innings. Unfortunately, he suffered a left calf strain while avoiding a popup.
Impressive Previous Season
At 31 years old, Senga previously finished as a runner-up in the National League Rookie of the Year voting, boasting a record of 12-7 with an ERA of 2.98 and 202 strikeouts last season. He is looking to participate in the final five games of the season against the Braves and Brewers, with the Mets trailing Atlanta by half a game in the race for the NL Wild Card.
Determination to Return
“I’m trying to get back as soon as I can,” Senga said. He has already begun playing catch from the mound and is ready to make throws, although he is unable to handle the workload of a starting pitcher just yet. “Whether they want me to be a relief pitcher or a starter, that depends on them,” he added.
Manager’s Support
The Mets are willing to utilize Senga in whatever capacity he feels comfortable, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. Additionally, newcomer Christian Scott may also be returning soon after being sidelined with an injury.
