Is Chris Hemsworth okay with the risk of developing Alzheimer’s?
Chris Hemsworth, 41, shared that the risk of developing Alzheimer’s has prompted him to take better care of himself and spend more time with his family. On April 2, the “God of Thunder” expressed his desire to publish a memoir to preserve family memories after discovering his increased risk of memory loss. Hemsworth has signed with Matt Martin, head of manuscript transactions at Creative Artist Agency (CAA), and will hire a ghostwriter through CAA to complete the book.
A close friend revealed that Hemsworth came up with the idea for the book around his 40th birthday in August last year. However, he doesn’t want the work to be seen as a boring celebrity memoir or a tell-all about the entertainment industry. “He just wants to write about himself as a father and share his healthy lifestyle,” the friend said.
Earlier, in an interview, Hemsworth made headlines when he announced he would take a break from acting. His doctor diagnosed him with a risk of Alzheimer’s that is “eight to ten times higher” than the global population due to inheriting the APOE4 gene from both parents. The actor’s grandfather also suffered from the disease. In reality, Hemsworth is not fully retiring but rather choosing roles more selectively to spend more time with his family.
Chris Hemsworth is committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and staying optimistic. In an interview in October 2023, the actor compared his diagnosis to a reminder to protect his health at all costs so his body can withstand illness. “What I do for my brain is good for my whole body, and I’ve turned a challenge into a positive,” Hemsworth shared.
To improve his health, Hemsworth has changed his habits, especially focusing on sleep quality. He avoids using his phone or computer an hour before bed and reads at night instead. He also focuses on minimizing stress and improving mental health. Hemsworth has adjusted his workout routine to prioritize his nervous system health over muscle strength. “I’ve always worked out regularly, but recently I’ve realized the importance of taking time for myself, not letting external factors influence me, and focusing on stillness,” the actor said.
In addition to working out, Hemsworth practices mindfulness and breathing exercises, especially during sauna sessions or ice baths. He remains active in various outdoor sports. According to the actor, these activities allow him to fully enjoy life and help him unwind. Hemsworth mentioned that surfing is his favorite activity.
Chris Hemsworth frequently travels with his family and shares many moments on social media. He and his children participate in activities like horseback riding, surfing, skiing, and fishing. Men’s Health noted that Thor always makes time to drop his kids off at school, teach them, and play sports with them to foster family bonds.
Besides his health-focused activities, Hemsworth also strives to balance his personal life and career. He told Dr. Peter Attia on the Drive podcast in December 2022, “Reducing my workload has made me think about the kids, how they’re growing up, and how fast things are changing. I want to sit still, not sprint anymore, and just appreciate life as it is right now.”
