Iran warns of the risk of losing GPS signals in its airspace
Iran has recently alerted airlines about potential disruptions to GPS signals within its airspace and has recommended the activation of electronic warfare measures. On August 5, Iranian authorities issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) highlighting the risk of GPS signal degradation or loss over Iranian skies. Pilots are advised to promptly report any GPS signal anomalies to air traffic control.
While the precise cause and extent of the GPS signal disruption remain unclear, speculation suggests it may involve the activation of electronic warfare systems in Iran. Such systems are typically employed to interfere with enemy-guided weapon navigation systems. Disrupted GPS signals pose significant risks to commercial aircraft by potentially hindering pilots’ ability to accurately determine their position and flight path, thus increasing the risk of accidents. However, modern aircraft are equipped with backup navigation systems to mitigate the impact of GPS signal loss during flights.

NOTAMs play a crucial role in providing essential updates to pilots and aviation authorities worldwide regarding changes in navigation aids, services, operational procedures, or potential hazards. They offer real-time updates, especially when such data is not available prior to departure.
This warning comes amid escalating tensions, following Iran’s recent threat of “severe retaliation at the time, place, and manner deemed appropriate” after the assassination of a senior Hezbollah member in Lebanon and a Hamas leader in Tehran. Iran and its allies have accused Israel of orchestrating these attacks, although Tel Aviv has only acknowledged its involvement in Lebanon.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting with senior security officials on August 4. Israeli media reports indicate uncertainty among officials regarding Iran’s potential responses, with various strategies being considered to counter or prevent a possible imminent attack.
According to Ynet, a leading Israeli newspaper, preemptive strikes against Iran are being contemplated as a deterrent. However, officials stress that such actions will only be taken if concrete evidence of an impending Iranian attack on Israel is obtained.
