Historic Elephant Calf Born at Fresno Chaffee Zoo Amid Elephant Breeding Program
A significant milestone was reached at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo in California as an elephant calf was born, marking a historic moment for the zoo’s elephant breeding program. The calf, born to African elephant Nolwazi early on Friday, is under 24/7 surveillance by zoo staff, ensuring its health and safety. This event is particularly notable as it’s the first time one of the zoo’s elephants has given birth.
Jon Forrest Dohlin, the zoo’s chief executive, described the birth as a “historic moment” for the facility, located approximately 150 miles southeast of San Francisco in central California. The Fresno Chaffee Zoo initiated its elephant breeding program with the goal of allowing future generations of visitors to experience the majesty of these creatures up close.
Despite the excitement, the zoo’s breeding efforts have not been without controversy. Some animal activists have criticized the program, arguing that zoos cannot adequately meet the complex needs of elephants. These critics often point to the trend among larger zoos to phase out their elephant programs, instead opting to relocate the animals to sanctuaries that offer more space and a more natural environment.
In 2022, Fresno Chaffee Zoo introduced a male elephant with the hope that he would mate with Nolwazi and her daughter, Amahle. The program’s success is already evident with Nolwazi’s newborn calf, and excitement continues to build as Amahle is also expected to give birth in the coming weeks.
The zoo’s breeding program highlights the critical role of captive breeding in the conservation of elephants, which have a long gestation period of 22 months and relatively few offspring throughout their lives. As wild populations face numerous threats, successful breeding in zoos may prove essential for the species’ long-term survival.
By investing in breeding programs, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo hopes to contribute to the preservation of elephants while providing visitors with the opportunity to learn about and appreciate these magnificent animals.
