Halsey Speaks Out Against Fan Criticism After Release of “Lucky”: “I Regret Coming Back”
Halsey has recently faced a wave of negativity from her own fans following the release of her latest single, “Lucky.” In a heartfelt and candid post on social media, the singer expressed deep regret about returning to the music scene amid such harsh criticism.
The “Without Me” artist, who has been dealing with significant health issues over the past few years, took to Tumblr to share her feelings. “My own fans are hands down meaner to me than any other people on the planet,” Halsey wrote in a lengthy post. She clarified that this sentiment didn’t apply to all her fans, but the negativity from a vocal majority had become overwhelming. “It used to be just a minority that were awful to me and now it seems like a majority have only stuck around to chime in occasionally with their opinion of how much they hate me or how awful I am. It’s hard to want to engage in a space that is completely devoid of any kindness, sympathy, patience; or to be honest human decency. Especially after years of hiding from the interactions for fear that this EXACT thing would happen.”
Halsey continued, “I almost lost my life. I am not gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford it. When I got sick all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of THIS again, but I don’t even know what this is anymore and I want to crawl in a hole and I regret coming back.”
The criticism Halsey has faced wasn’t directly addressed in her post, but the release of “Lucky,” which came out on July 26, appears to be the catalyst. The song, which features an interpolation of Britney Spears’ 2000 hit “Lucky,” sparked conversations among fans about its creation. In response to a fan inquiry about whether Spears was involved, Halsey assured them, “Yes of course! I wouldn’t even dream of doing it without her blessing!”
The accompanying music video for “Lucky,” directed by Gia Coppola, explores the darker aspects of fame, drawing inspiration from Spears’ original video. The track is anticipated to be part of Halsey’s upcoming fifth studio album, which follows her public revelation about her severe health issues.
In June, Halsey opened up about her health struggles, disclosing her diagnoses. “In 2022, I was first diagnosed with Lupus SLE and then a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder,” she shared. “Both of which are currently being managed or in remission; and both of which I will likely have for the duration of my life. After a rocky start, I slowly got everything under control with the help of amazing doctors.”
Despite these challenges, Halsey remains a resilient figure in the music industry, continually pushing forward with her artistry. Her latest single and its reception highlight the complexities of fame and the pressures that come with it, especially from those who are supposed to be supportive fans. As Halsey navigates this turbulent period, her candidness about her experiences and feelings offers a raw and real perspective on the realities of being in the public eye.
