Before the men’s 200m individual medley event in the early morning of August 3, Léon Marchand had excellently won 3 gold medals and broken 3 Olympic records this year. Fans of the host country were expecting another impressive performance from Marchand. In the end, he did not disappoint them when he won with a time of 1 minute 54 seconds 06, breaking Michael Phelps’ Olympic record from Beijing 2008 and affirming his superior class.
“It’s unbelievable! It’s a miracle to win 4 gold medals at the Olympics. I’m so happy right now and I’ll never forget this moment,” Marchand emotionally shared with French national television.
The 22-year-old French swimmer has joined Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz and Kristin Otto in winning 4 individual gold medals at one Olympics. He also became the 13th swimmer to win 4 gold medals at one Olympics, including the relay event.
With 4 gold medals in all 4 events he participated in, Léon Marchand is a strong candidate for the title of best athlete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Marchand is expected to compete in the men’s 4x100m medley relay early tomorrow morning, August 4.
