Emilia Clarke’s Return to Television: Expectations vs. Reality
Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is making a triumphant return to television, but this isn’t the kind of role I really wanted to see her take on. The actress became famous for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s hit series, but she hasn’t found a role with similar impact since then.
Emilia Clarke’s Acting Since Game of Thrones
Although Clarke’s performances since Game of Thrones have been commendable, the films she has participated in have not fully utilized her proven abilities. Now, Prime Video’s Criminal might change the game, but I am still disappointed that she hasn’t been cast in a specific type of series.
Anticipation for Criminal on Prime Video
Criminal is another lesser-known comic series that Prime Video has decided to produce, and it certainly promises excitement. Described as a dark crime action film, Criminal follows, as the title suggests, various criminals, from corrupt cops to petty thieves. The series will star Clarke alongside actor Charlie Hunnam and other notable actors like Adria Arjona, Pat Healy, and John Hawkes. Clarke’s character, Mallory, is sharp and complex, making this a series worth watching. However, I find myself disappointed by this television return.
Desiring Different Roles for Clarke
I would love to see Emilia Clarke in a political or historical drama. It doesn’t necessarily have to be fantasy. Like many who know Clarke as an actress from her work in Game of Thrones, I am disappointed that she hasn’t taken on any roles close to that since then. Of course, I understand why she didn’t immediately jump into another fantasy series. After a wildly successful series and an iconic role, typecasting is a valid concern. However, it seems Clarke has gone entirely in the opposite direction.
Wasting Clarke’s Talent
None of her roles since then have captured the intense majesty she brought to the screen as Daenerys, and this seems like a waste. For this reason, I would love to see Clarke return to television in the form of a political period drama instead of another action project. Gunslingers are certainly great, but characters like these don’t allow Clarke to shine as she did in Game of Thrones. I want to see her as a cool leader, perhaps this time in a historical drama instead of a fantasy one. That would be a fresh yet familiar way for Clarke to return after her recent roles have fallen short.
Why Emilia Clarke’s Roles Since Game of Thrones Haven’t Been Impressive
Clarke shines as a character with less traditional power. She has proven herself to be an outstanding actress, but her projects since Game of Thrones have been disappointing. While Game of Thrones was still airing, Clarke played Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys (2015), a film that didn’t impress critics or justify its enormous budget at the box office. In the years that followed, she joined the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, but both films failed in their respective IPs. Clarke’s foray into romance was quite successful, with Me Before You performing well at the box office. However, this success was short-lived.
Conclusion
Emilia Clarke’s return to television is something to look forward to, but fans still hope she will find roles that better showcase her talents. Hopefully, in the future, Clarke
