Dmitry Bivol has no interest in testing Artur Beterbiev’s power. Since starting boxing at six years old, Bivol’s motivation has always been to be the best in the world, not to engage in unnecessary risk. His inspiration from Roy Jones Jr., a legendary light-heavyweight champion, helped shape his mindset. “If it wasn’t for Roy Jones, maybe I would not be here,” Bivol admitted in a recent interview with BoxingScene and ProBox TV. Now, he faces a different kind of challenge in Artur Beterbiev, the undefeated, three-belt champion.
Rigorous Preparation for a Tough Fight
Bivol’s preparation for his upcoming fight on Saturday in Saudi Arabia has been intense. His training camps in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan and Turkey show his dedication to be ready for what many see as his toughest career test. Facing a fighter like Beterbiev, who boasts a perfect record of 20 knockouts in 20 fights, is no easy task. Despite Beterbiev’s power and the way he systematically dismantles his opponents, Bivol remains composed. “I don’t know how I’ll handle his power, to be honest,” Bivol chuckled, “We’ll see in the fight.”
Bivol’s Strategic Approach
Rather than worrying about Beterbiev’s strength, Bivol is focused on honing his own skills. He knows that all of his abilities need to be sharp: speed, movement, and awareness. His victory over Canelo Alvarez two years ago was a clear demonstration of his tactical intelligence. Bivol outmaneuvered Alvarez, overcoming heavy punches, and won through technical brilliance.
Confidence Despite Lower Knockout Percentage
While Bivol’s knockout percentage is lower than Beterbiev’s, he’s not concerned. “I’m not an amazing puncher like him,” Bivol said, but he believes in his ability to land strategic blows and endure a 12-round fight if needed.
Future Fights on Hold
As for future matchups, Bivol isn’t looking beyond Beterbiev. Although his manager, Vadim Kornilov, has mentioned potential showdowns with David Benavidez or a rematch with Alvarez, Bivol refuses to speculate. “I don’t think about any fight other than Beterbiev,” he said.
The Ultimate Goal: Undisputed Champion
Bivol’s primary goal is to be considered the best in boxing. A victory over Beterbiev would not only make him the undisputed light heavyweight champion but also solidify his position among boxing’s elite.
