“Deadpool & Wolverine” Nears $1 Billion Mark
The film “Deadpool & Wolverine” has grossed over $824 million globally within just 10 days of its release, with projections suggesting it will surpass the $1 billion mark in a matter of days.
According to Variety on August 4, the film topped the North American box office over the weekend, adding $97 million to its earnings, bringing its domestic total to $395 million. Internationally, the film has garnered $428.5 million.
The third installment of Deadpool has already surpassed the earnings of the first two films, which grossed $783 million and $786 million, respectively. It has also become the second highest-grossing film of the year, following “Inside Out 2,” which made $1.5 billion.
Besides the U.S. and Canada, the top five markets for the film include China ($45.2 million), the UK ($42.4 million), Mexico ($32.8 million), Australia ($24.6 million), and Germany ($19.1 million).
Industry experts attribute the film’s appeal to its blend of action and humor. Unlike typical heroes striving to make the world a better place, Deadpool is a troublemaker, known for his crude jokes and reckless behavior. He breaks the “fourth wall” (a term referring to the imaginary barrier between the film and the audience), engaging directly with viewers and mocking superhero genre clichés. Additionally, Ryan Reynolds’ deep understanding of the character has helped the franchise retain its audience, according to The Wrap.
Directed by Shawn Levy, the film is set after the events of the second installment. Wade Wilson/Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) decides to live a normal life with his loved ones. However, agents from the Time Variance Authority (TVA) appear, kidnapping Deadpool and introducing him to the MCU. Unable to fight the evil forces alone, Deadpool seeks help from Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman). The film has received widespread acclaim from various film review sites and has been hailed as a “turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” led the North American box office, far outpacing new releases such as M. Night Shyamalan’s horror film “Trap” ($15.6 million, third place) and “Harold and the Purple Crayon” ($6 million, in the top six). “Twisters” took second place with $22.7 million in its third week, totaling $274 million. “Despicable Me 4” ranked fourth with $11 million (totaling $752 million), while “Inside Out 2” followed with $6.7 million.
