Court Requested by Jennifer Lopez to Drop Her Husband’s Surname
Jennifer Lopez, who took Ben Affleck’s surname after their marriage, has now filed a petition with the court requesting to revert to her former name. In the divorce papers submitted on August 20, the “On the Floor” singer expressed her desire to change her legal name from Jennifer Lynn Affleck back to Jennifer Lynn Lopez.
Jennifer Lopez’s Name Change After Marriage
After marrying Ben Affleck in July 2022, Jennifer Lopez revealed that she had taken her husband’s surname and referred to herself as “Mrs. Jennifer Lynn Affleck” in an announcement shared on her personal website, On the JLo.
At that time, Jennifer Lopez, then 55, embraced the idea of taking Ben Affleck’s last name, calling the gesture “romantic” and “traditional.” In a November 2022 interview with Vogue magazine, she explained, “People will still call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name is Mrs. Affleck because we’re joined together. We’re husband and wife, and I’m proud of that.“
Divorce and Reverting to Jennifer Lopez
However, after two years of marriage, Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce on the exact day of their wedding anniversary, noting the separation date as April 26. Along with the name change request, Lopez made it clear that she is not seeking spousal support and declined any financial assistance from Ben Affleck post-divorce.
Prenuptial Agreement and Financial Details
The couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement, meaning all the income they earned over the past two years is considered joint marital assets. Currently, Jennifer Lopez’s net worth is estimated at around $400 million, while Ben Affleck’s assets are valued at approximately $150 million. This will be Jennifer Lopez’s fourth divorce. She was previously married to Ojani Noa (1997–1998), Cris Judd (2001–2003), and Marc Anthony (2004–2014). Lopez shares 16-year-old twins with Marc Anthony.
As Jennifer Lopez moves forward with her divorce from Ben Affleck, she has formally requested to revert to her maiden name. Despite not signing a prenuptial agreement, Lopez has chosen not to seek spousal support, emphasizing her desire for independence post-divorce.
