Think your furry friend has what it takes to become a world record holder?
At Guinness World Records, we have a deep appreciation for all creatures, big and small, especially those with the potential to break records. Do you have a dog taller than any you’ve ever seen, or perhaps a cat with whiskers that seem to go on forever? If your pet has an extraordinary trait, it might just be the next record holder!
Unclaimed Animal Records Await. There are numerous iconic animal records that are currently unclaimed or haven’t been broken in years. Could your pet be the one to set a new standard?
Tallest Horse: The record for the tallest living horse is currently vacant. The last record holder was Big Jake, a Belgian draft horse from Smokey Hollow Farms in Poynette, Wisconsin, USA. In January 2010, at the age of nine, Big Jake measured an impressive 210.19 cm (20.3 hands) without shoes. If your horse is at least six years old, it could be the next in line! Measurements must be taken by a qualified vet, from the base of the foot to the withers.
Tallest Dogs: Both the tallest dog living (male) and tallest dog living (female) records are up for grabs. The last female record was held by Lizzie, a Great Dane from Fort Myers, Florida, USA, who measured 96.41 cm (3 ft 1 in) tall in 2014. The male title was last held by Kevin, another Great Dane from West Des Moines, Iowa, USA, who stood at 97 cm (3 ft 2 in) tall in 2024. If your dog is at least one year old and towers over others, it could claim these titles.
Surfing Dog: The record for the longest wave surfed by a dog (open water) has not been challenged since Abbie Girl surfed 107.2 m (351.7 ft) at Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego, California, USA, in 2011. If your dog is a surfing superstar, it might just break this record. Dogs must be at least one year old to compete.
Longest Cat Whiskers: Missi, a Maine Coon from Iisvesi, Finland, set the record for the longest cat whiskers in 2005, with one measuring 19 cm (7.5 in). If your cat’s whiskers are impressively long, and intact, it could be the next record holder. Measurements should be taken from the base to the tip of the whisker.
Longest Dog Tail: No dog has claimed the record for the longest tail since Keon, a pooch from Belgium, set it in 2015 with a tail measuring 76.8 cm (30.2 in). If your dog’s tail is notably long, it could take this title. Dogs must be at least one year old to qualify.
Longest Rabbit: The record for the longest living rabbit hasn’t been broken since Darius, a Flemish giant rabbit from the UK, claimed it in 2010, measuring 129 cm (4 ft 3 in). If your rabbit is over 18 months old, it might just be the one to surpass Darius. Measurements are to be taken from the tip of the front foot to the tip of the back foot.
Longest Rabbit Ears: No bunny has ever claimed the record for the longest ears on a living rabbit. If your rabbit’s ears are exceptionally long, this could be its chance. The ears should be measured from where they join the skull to the tip.
