“Discover three unique spots in Seoul where you can beat the heat: cuddle with Samoyeds, sip coffee in a terrarium-filled cafe, and dive into comics—all offering a perfect escape from the city’s summer hustle”
In the vibrant Hongdae area, dog lovers can find a haven at Winter’s Village, a special cafe where 11 Samoyeds and a Malamute roam freely across two floors. The cafe’s owner, who personally cares for the dogs, ensures that the animals’ well-being is a top priority by limiting the number of visitors and providing regular breaks for the dogs.
To help guests distinguish between the nearly identical Samoyeds, their tails are dyed in light natural hues, and name tags are displayed on the walls. The cafe staff, fluent in Japanese, Chinese, and English, guide visitors through detailed instructions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
While at Winter’s Village, you can take pictures with the fluffy dogs, hand out treats, or simply relax and watch them play. Pets are not allowed, and the cafe is open to visitors aged 10 and above, with children under 13 required to be accompanied by an adult. The cafe closes every Tuesday, and the last entry is at 8 p.m.
Nature in a Glass at Aquagarden
Located in Seoul’s Lotte World Mall, Aquagarden is a unique cafe where you can enjoy a coffee while gazing at sea turtles and other underwater scenes. The cafe is dedicated to its mission of “building your own nature,” offering an array of terrariums featuring artistically arranged plants instead of fish.
Terrariums are gaining popularity due to their low maintenance, requiring less frequent watering than typical houseplants. An Aquagarden official mentioned that these glass jars make for beautiful home decor. The terrariums, designed by in-house artists, vary in size, with one of the best-selling jars priced at 120,000 won ($87).
For those who prefer traditional aquariums, Aquagarden also offers a selection, including a high-end fish tank priced at around $8,720. Professional maintenance services are available for those who need assistance.
Escape into Comics at Akiba Comics
Akiba Comics provides a cool and affordable retreat from the heat, offering a variety of activities for comic lovers. After paying the entrance fee, visitors can store their belongings in a randomly assigned room and explore the shop.
The first floor showcases a range of animation merchandise, while the basement features rows of bookshelves filled with Japanese manga, webtoons, and more. Comfortable seating and record players are available, allowing you to listen to music while browsing through the comics.
Once you’ve selected your reading material, you can retreat to your room upstairs, equipped with a screen projector and streaming services like Netflix and Tving, to watch your favorite movies and series.
If you get hungry, the cafe offers signature drinks such as melon soda and blue soda, along with a menu of dishes including tteokbokki, pizza, burritos, and pasta.
Basic entry is 3,600 won ($2.61) per hour, with an option for unlimited access at 22,000 won.
