Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense Asserts National Security Amid Opposition Agitation
On August 19, Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) affirmed that no protests or anti-government activities occurred over the weekend, despite calls from opposition groups abroad. The MoD confirmed that the security situation in Cambodia remains stable and peaceful, with the armed forces on high alert to prevent any potential disturbances.
On August 18, several opposition figures operating from abroad attempted to incite protests against the government in the capital, Phnom Penh. However, General Chhum Sucheat, the MoD spokesperson, confirmed that there were no signs of any marching activities across Cambodia. The current situation indicates that the opposition has failed in its attempts to ignite large-scale protests aimed at overthrowing the government. According to the Khmer Times, the MoD’s assessment is clear: the opposition’s efforts have not succeeded, and the government retains firm control.
General Chhum Sucheat emphasized that “the opposition abroad attempted to overthrow the legitimate government using undemocratic methods, but they failed.” He also stated that the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces are always prepared to intervene if any incidents threaten the peace and stability of the nation. Additionally, General Sucheat supported the authorities in arresting those who incite protests and called on the courts to impose severe punishments on these individuals, in order to maintain national order and security.
Touch Sokhak, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, also confirmed that authorities are in the process of identifying and arresting individuals involved in inciting protests. According to Sokhak, some individuals were apprehended while traveling from neighboring provinces to Phnom Penh with the intent to participate in protests. Touch Sokhak described the actions of the opposition as a “color revolution” aimed at toppling Cambodia’s legitimate government.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha had instructed authorities to strengthen security measures nationwide to counter the incitement by opposition groups. Police and provincial authorities have also been ordered to closely monitor the situation in their respective areas to ensure that no events disrupt public order and security.
A spokesperson for the Cambodian National Police stated that as of August 16, 14 individuals had been arrested for their involvement in inciting protests. These actions underscore the Cambodian government’s determination to maintain national security and stability in the face of external attempts to destabilize the country.
