Brad Pitt’s Daughter No Longer Carries His Last Name
Shiloh, the daughter of actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has officially dropped her father’s last name. The court has recognized her new name as Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.
According to TMZ on August 19, the Los Angeles Superior Court approved Shiloh’s name change without the need for a hearing. In late July, the court proceedings regarding her name change were delayed due to incomplete background checks.
“Such delays are quite normal. Anyone requesting a name change must have their records reviewed by the court clerk. Due to an administrative error, Shiloh’s hearing was postponed,” Peter Levine, her attorney, explained to People at the time. Under California law, before a judge can approve a name change, the request must be publicly announced in a newspaper. Shiloh chose the Los Angeles Times, where the announcement was published in the legal notices section on June 17 and 24, and July 1 and 8, according to Page Six.
Shiloh filed for the name change on her 18th birthday on May 27, hiring an attorney on her own to assist with the process. A week later, a source close to Brad Pitt told People that the actor was deeply saddened by his daughter’s decision. “Shiloh dropping the ‘Pitt’ surname is a painful reminder that he’s lost his child. Naturally, this is not easy for him. Brad still loves and misses the kids,” the source said.
Shiloh is now the first of the Jolie-Pitt children to have a legally recognized new name. Her two sisters, Zahara (19) and Vivienne (16), have publicly stopped using their father’s last name but have not sought legal recognition for this. Meanwhile, Maddox (23) is believed to have unofficially changed his surname in various documents. Some sources suggest that Pax Thien (21) has also opted to use only his mother’s last name. Knox (16) is the only child who has not publicly taken a stance on his parents’ divorce.
Shiloh, formerly known as Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, was born in 2006 in Namibia, Africa, while Angelina Jolie was on a humanitarian mission as a United Nations ambassador. The couple chose to give birth outside of the United States to avoid media scrutiny. Following Jolie and Pitt’s divorce in 2016, Shiloh and her siblings have lived with their mother in Los Angeles. In addition to inheriting her parents’ looks, Shiloh has gained attention for her talent in contemporary dance.
