Alain Delon’s beloved dog escaped a tragic fate when he was buried with him
Before his death on August 18, legendary French actor Alain Delon prepared a grave for himself and his beloved dog. In case he passes away first, he plans to request euthanasia for his beloved pet to accompany him to the afterlife.
Alain Delon, an iconic figure of French cinema, passed away at the age of 88 on August 18. Throughout his illustrious career, Delon was often involved in many scandals.
Delon caused outrage when he revealed in a January 2018 interview with Paris Match that he had prepared a grave not only for himself but also for his dog Loubo, a Belgian shepherd that he claims to love “like a child”.
“If I die first, I will ask the vet to euthanize Loubo so we can leave together,” Delon declared.
However, Loubo escaped this fate after Delon’s statement attracted backlash from animal rights activists in France.
On August 19, La SPA, a French animal protection organization, issued a statement condemning Delon’s intention to euthanize the dog. “An animal’s life should not depend on human decisions,” La SPA asserted, adding that they would take Loubo in and find him a new home and family.
In a 2018 interview with Paris Match, Delon spoke about the “special bond” he shared with Loubo, his “last dog.” He also devised a plan for Loubo to be euthanized with him when he died.
Delon explained: “He will be given an injection so he can sleep peacefully in my arms.
Following Delon’s death, concerns about Loubo’s uncertain future and the risk of euthanasia increased. The Brigitte Bardot Foundation, an animal rights organization founded by the former movie star, stepped in to resolve the situation.
“Don’t worry about Loubo,” the organization assured the public the day after Delon’s death in social media posts.
The Bardot Foundation revealed that it has received many messages from supporters concerned about Loubo’s future and shared some reassuring news from Delon’s family. Delon’s relatives confirmed that they will take care of Loubo. “Of course, Loubo will not be euthanized,” the organization added, referring to Delon’s three children— Anouchka, Anthony and Alain-Fabien — all of whom are actors.
Over the weekend, Bardot and her organization paid tribute to Delon, his cinematic legacy, and his deep affection for animals. “Alain understands the deep bond between humans and animals,” the organization wrote in a statement on August 18.
