A New Journey with Bill Gates’ Hydrogen Superyacht
Bill Gates’ impressive hydrogen-powered superyacht, Breakthrough, has embarked on its maiden voyage for essential sea trials. This extraordinary vessel, designed to operate on green hydrogen stored at an astonishing -423.4°F, carries a staggering price tag of over $600 million and features 14 balconies, two offices, a basketball court, and several libraries.
A Groundbreaking Vessel
After much anticipation, the innovative Feadship yacht Breakthrough, formerly known as Project 821, was recently seen during sea trials near IJmuiden, Amsterdam. As the world’s first fuel-cell-powered superyacht, Breakthrough exemplifies the visionary ethos of its owner, Bill Gates. Although the centibillionaire ultimately decided against taking delivery of the remarkable 390-foot vessel, it is distinguished by its zero-diesel operation, harnessing emission-free energy derived from green hydrogen to power its various amenities.
A Luxury Experience
Picture the world’s sixth-richest individual exploring remote destinations aboard this opulent yacht. Breakthrough is equipped with onboard liquid hydrogen storage that utilizes fuel cells to generate electricity. This yacht surpasses Mark Zuckerberg’s $300 million Launchpad, making it the largest motor yacht ever launched in the Netherlands. Designed by RWD, Breakthrough reflects the luxurious tastes and preferences of the 68-year-old tech mogul.
Innovative Features
The yacht includes numerous technological innovations, featuring the most hull openings of any Feadship vessel to date. With the press of a button, users can operate 14 slide-out balconies, five shell doors, and seven opening platforms. The balconies extend with side railings, creating a seamless transition to the interior when fully deployed. The superyacht accommodates 30 guests in 15 rooms, with a notable four-level townhouse designated for the owner. Additional amenities include coffee corners, a games area on the bridge deck, and a private dining room offering gourmet meals on the sea terrace.
Exceptional Amenities
Breakthrough also features an extensive library, cinema, gym, fireplaces, and more. Powered by triple MTU engines, the yacht achieves a cruising speed of 14 knots and a top speed of 17 knots. With a storage capacity of 543 kWh, the fuel cell technology ensures a week’s worth of silent operation at anchor, or it can navigate emission-free at 10 knots. Jamie Edmiston, CEO of Edmiston, aptly described the project as “the best yacht ever built.”
With its groundbreaking design and sustainable technology, Bill Gates’ Breakthrough redefines luxury yachting. This hydrogen-powered superyacht sets a new benchmark for eco-friendly innovation, combining opulence with a commitment to environmental.
