Superstars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana have expressed that their involvement in the genre-defying film “Emilia Perez” allowed them to explore their emotions and showcase their talents in profound ways. Directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, “Emilia Perez” combines elements of musical, crime, and comedy genres to narrate the compelling story of a Mexican cartel leader, portrayed by Karla Sofia Gascon, who undergoes a gender transition and establishes a nonprofit organization aimed at locating missing individuals.
Karla Sofia Gascon, a transgender actress, delivers a dual performance, embodying both the male and female personas of Emilia Perez. Zoe Saldana plays the role of a lawyer who supports Perez throughout her transition, while Selena Gomez takes on the character of Perez’s children’s mother.
Gomez, who hails from Texas, referred to the project as a “gift of patience and audaciousness.” She remarked on the emotional depth the film allowed her to explore, saying, “I should be happy in my life. I should be passionate. I should be frustrated when it’s my time to feel frustrated. It allowed me to feel.” These reflections were made during the film’s premiere at the London Film Festival, underscoring the personal significance of the project for the actress.
“Emilia Perez” is presented in melodious Spanish, showcasing the cast’s singing and dancing talents. This aspect of the film resonated deeply with Saldana, who shared, “It gave me an opportunity to reconnect with a part of me that I had long ago said goodbye to.” She explained that as she embarked on her acting career, she felt she had to shed her identity as a dancer, despite utilizing those skills to enhance her roles in action films. “I miss it. I will always be a dancer at heart,” Saldana added, reflecting on the emotional connection she has with her past.
The film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it garnered significant acclaim, winning the jury prize. Furthermore, Saldana, Gascon, Gomez, and Adriana Paz were collectively honored with the Best Actress award. The film’s success has sparked discussions about its potential for Oscar nominations, with Saldana expressing her gratitude for the recognition. “I’m grateful if this takes me all the way there. It would be a dream come true,” she stated. However, she emphasized her commitment to supporting other women in the industry, saying, “I was raised by a woman who always compelled me to be proud of other women. If I’m going to be cheering on another woman in my category, if I even make it to these categories, I’m going to be just as happy and just as proud.”
“Emilia Perez” is set to stream on Netflix starting November 13, promising to deliver a unique cinematic experience that resonates with audiences through its rich storytelling and emotional depth. The film not only showcases the talents of its cast but also addresses important themes of identity, resilience, and the quest for justice.
