This summer marks the 20th anniversary of “Mission: Impossible II,” one of the biggest action blockbusters of the early 2000s. Director John Woo admitted that he crossed the line by incorporating more stunts than necessary, leading to a long filming schedule. Initially, Brian De Palma, who directed the first film, planned to return but ultimately left due to creative disagreements with the producers. Tom Cruise, wanting to realize his vision for the film, had to finance several aspects of the film’s production himself, leading to delays and complications.
Tom Cruise’s Daring Stunts
The film opens with a breathtaking scene of Cruise dangling off a cliff in Utah without a safety net. While a harness was used, it was digitally removed during post-production. Notably, Cruise repeatedly performed daring jumps between two cliffs and only stopped when he injured his shoulder.
In one particularly tense scene, Scott holds a knife dangerously close to Cruise’s eyes. Despite the director’s objections, Cruise insisted on using a real knife, trusting Scott to use his full force. Even though there were safety mechanisms in place, the tension on set was still palpable.
During the film’s climax, an accident occurred when Cruise accidentally kicked Scott in the jaw while filming an action scene, resulting in a bloody wound. Both actors’ authentic reactions were captured in the film, adding an unexpected layer of authenticity to their performances.
Unlike other installments in the franchise, “Mission: Impossible II” featured Ethan Hunt without significant tensions with his superiors. In contrast, the first film saw Hunt accused of being a mole, while later seasons would see him at odds with various government agencies.
