Camila Cabello has finally shared the reasons behind her split from fellow pop star Shawn Mendes after their two-year relationship. In a candid interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the “Havana” singer explained how both she and Mendes had grown and shifted their priorities, leading to their decision to part ways.
Cabello, 24, reflected on how time and personal growth played a role in the breakup. “As I get older, the priorities shift,” she said. “And I feel like it was that way for both of us. We both started so young, too. It’s like we’re really learning how to be healthy adults.”
Cabello emphasized that their breakup was not due to any animosity but rather a mutual understanding. “I love Shawn, and I feel like there is literally nothing but love for him,” she shared, adding that she’s focused on personal growth and therapy. “My focus really has shifted a lot.”
The couple, who began dating in July 2019 after the release of their hit single “Señorita,” had been longtime friends since collaborating on their 2015 track “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Their chemistry sparked romance rumors early on, but both initially denied being romantically involved.
Mendes himself admitted in an interview with James Corden last year that he didn’t realize he was in love with Cabello for a long time. Reflecting on a 2015 clip where he denied their relationship, Mendes said, “I didn’t even accept that I was completely in love with her for another three years after that point.”
In November 2021, the pair announced their breakup with a heartfelt joint statement on Instagram, reassuring fans that their bond remained strong. “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” they wrote. They also promised to “continue to be best friends” moving forward.
