People Magazine has unveiled an exclusive first look at Tyler Perry’s upcoming Netflix film, “The Six Triple Eight,” along with its release date: December 20, 2024. Accompanying the announcement is a newly released teaser trailer, offering a glimpse into this historical drama.
“The Six Triple Eight” tells the extraordinary true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion during World War II. This battalion’s vital role involved resolving a massive three-year backlog of undelivered mail, allowing soldiers to reconnect with their families. The film highlights the battalion’s triumphs, achieved despite discrimination and the challenges of a war-torn environment. Their efforts helped boost morale by delivering 17 million pieces of mail, ensuring that American soldiers could stay in touch with their loved ones.
The film stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the battalion’s commanding officer, and Ebony Obsidian as Lena King, one of the battalion’s officers. Tyler Perry, who serves as the writer, director, and producer of the film, was inspired by his real-life meeting with Lena King, who passed away earlier this year. “After one few-hour session with her, I had a whole script in my head,” Perry shared in an interview with People.
The screenplay for “The Six Triple Eight” is based on an article by historian Kevin M. Hymel, which chronicles the story of 855 women who bravely contributed to the war effort. These women played a crucial role in restoring communication for soldiers on the front lines, ultimately delivering not just mail, but hope to thousands of families.
Produced by Tyler Perry alongside Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, and Carlota Espinosa, this film is part of Perry’s multi-year first-look deal with Netflix, through which he continues to write, direct, and produce content for the platform.
Mark your calendars for December 20, 2024, when “The Six Triple Eight” will premiere globally on Netflix, bringing this powerful, untold story to life.
