Historic Paralympian Overcomes Challenges at Paris 2024 with a Bed That Finally Fits
Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, renowned as the tallest Paralympian in history, faced an unexpected challenge at the Paris 2024 Games—he was forced to sleep on the floor due to the lack of a bed that could accommodate his extraordinary height. Standing at an impressive eight feet, one inch (2.46 meters), Mehrzad is not only the tallest Paralympian but also the second-tallest man in the world. Despite the difficulty, his spirit remained unshaken, and the issue has since been resolved, according to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Iran’s head coach, Hadi Rezaeigarkani, revealed that while a custom bed had been provided for Mehrzad during the Tokyo Games three years ago, such preparations were not made in Paris. Consequently, Mehrzad had to endure uncomfortable nights on the floor. However, this did not deter his determination. Rezaeigarkani noted, “He doesn’t have a special bed, but he has the most important aim in his mind. It doesn’t matter for him whether he will lay on the floor or he’s not going to have enough to eat. In any way, he has the mind to become a champion.”
In response to the situation, the Paralympics organizers took swift action. The IPC confirmed that the beds in the Paralympic Village are modular by design and that two extensions were initially provided at the request of the Iranian National Paralympic Committee (NPC). However, these extensions proved insufficient. The IPC has since provided additional extensions, ensuring that Mehrzad now has a bed that meets his unique needs.
Mehrzad’s extraordinary height is due to a condition called acromegaly, which he was diagnosed with at a young age. This condition, characterized by excessive growth hormone, was further complicated by a bicycle accident during his teenage years that left his right leg shorter than his left, making walking difficult. Despite these challenges, Mehrzad has become a pivotal figure in Iran’s sitting volleyball team. His towering presence, even when seated, makes him a formidable opponent on the court.
Iran’s sitting volleyball team has a storied history, with seven gold medals out of nine Paralympic Games since 1988. Mehrzad’s contribution to this legacy cannot be overstated, and with his bed issue resolved, he is ready to focus on his ultimate goal—continuing Iran’s dominance in the sport.
