Naomi Campbell, one of the most iconic supermodels, made a grand and stylish appearance at the 17th annual Harlem’s Fashion Row Fashion Show & Style Awards. She received the Fashion Icon Award at the event, and as usual, Naomi did not disappoint her fans. However, what made the evening particularly memorable was her playful but sharp “shade” directed at Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue.
During her introduction, Wintour took a jab at Naomi’s tendency to be late, to which the supermodel responded in true Naomi fashion. “I’ve always been unapologetically truthful, right? So why should I change it now at this age?” she remarked candidly. Wintour had described Naomi as “bold, bright, and entirely, unquestionably herself,” and Naomi certainly lived up to that description in her acceptance speech.
Naomi humorously acknowledged her habit of being late: “Yes, Naomi’s always late,” she said with a smile. “But I believe in my higher power, and I want to thank my higher power for allowing me to be here today.” This moment showcased her ability to command the stage while embracing her unique personality, even if it meant lightly teasing one of the most powerful figures in fashion.
During her speech, Naomi made an unexpected reference to Wintour as “the other lady,” expressing her joy at being reintroduced by Samira Nasr, the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar. Naomi did not forget to thank Anna for supporting her since the early days of her career, but her gratitude was laced with a touch of wit as she emphasized that she was not present to accept the award in person.
Naomi also took the time to honor the Black models who paved the way for her success, including Iman, Bethann Hardison, Naomi Sims, and others. She extended heartfelt thanks to her mother and grandmother, who have been instrumental in her journey. “This award is as much theirs as it is now my daughter’s,” she said, reflecting her deep sense of gratitude and humility.
However, Naomi was not the only honoree of the night. Harlem native Teyana Taylor received the Virgil Abloh Award and became emotional as she remembered her late brother. “It’s really divine timing to be accepting this award today because it’s my brother’s birthday. Rest in peace,” Teyana shared, her voice breaking with emotion.
The event not only celebrated legendary figures in fashion but also served as a platform for emerging Black designers. The collections presented by A. Potts, Latouché, and Nicole Benefield Portfolio showcased creativity and originality, highlighting the talent and potential of these designers to become the next industry icons.
The evening at Harlem’s Fashion Row Fashion Show & Style Awards was more than just a fashion event; it was a celebration of outstanding individuals who have shaped the fashion culture. Naomi Campbell, with her unmistakable style and personality, once again solidified her status as a true fashion icon on the global stage.
