Mother of Actress Han So Hee Arrested on Charges of Operating Illegal Gambling Rings
The mother of South Korean actress Han So Hee has been arrested under suspicion of “operating 12 illegal gambling sites.”
On September 3rd, the Wonju City Police Department announced the arrest of 54-year-old Shin on charges of running illegal gambling operations. Authorities revealed that she managed several online gambling sites, profiting from players by enticing them to deposit money from 2021 until late August this year. The police are currently investigating the extent of the profits Shin earned. Previously, she had faced multiple lawsuits for fraud.
Han So Hee’s management responded to the news, stating, “Han So Hee is devastated by this news. However, this is her mother’s issue and is unrelated to the actress.”
Han So Hee has faced numerous challenges due to her mother’s actions. In 2020, Shin used her daughter’s bank account to swindle 85 million won. At that time, several individuals accused Shin of persuading them to invest, only to disappear with their money. Han So Hee repaid part of the amount but declared she would not be responsible for her mother’s other actions. The actress explained, “My parents divorced when I was five, and my grandmother raised me. Even when I moved to Ulsan, where my mother lived, during high school, I continued to live with my grandmother. I didn’t visit my mother often, so it wasn’t until I turned 20 that I learned of her debts. Before becoming an actress, I tried to repay her debts to the best of my ability.”
However, in 2022, Han So Hee’s mother repeated similar behavior. The actress’s management issued a statement: “We are working to prevent further misuse of Han So Hee’s name for fraudulent activities.” They revealed that Shin had registered a bank account under Han So Hee’s name when she was still a minor and used it for fraudulent purposes for years.
Han So Hee, 30, shot to fame for her role as the other woman in the hit 18+ drama The World of the Married (2020). She went on to star in popular series such as Nevertheless and My Name. Dubbed the “Little Song Hye Kyo” due to her resemblance to the famous actress, Han So Hee is also a sought-after figure in the advertising world, attracting major fashion and beauty brands.
