Chinese athletes caused a fever with a 10-point diving performance
PARIS – Chinese diver Quan Hongchan made headlines by scoring perfect 10s from all seven judges during her first dive in the women’s 10m platform final at the 2024 Olympics.
Quan executed a forward three-and-a-half somersault with near-perfect technique, barely creating a splash as she entered the water. The Chinese fans in the stands erupted in cheers as all seven judges awarded her a perfect score of 10.
“I think the result is unbelievable. It feels amazing,” Quan shared after her dive. She amassed a total of 425.60 points over five dives, securing the gold medal. At just 17 years old, this marks Quan’s third Olympic gold medal. She previously won the women’s 10m platform event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In Paris, Quan also won gold in the women’s 10m synchronized diving with her partner Chen Yuxi.
Standing at only 1.5 meters tall, Quan is affectionately nicknamed the “Diving Queen.” She has already claimed three world championships and has scored perfect 10s three times before, including twice when she won gold at Tokyo 2020.
Chen Yuxi, who secured the silver medal in this event with a score of 420.70, closely followed Quan. North Korea’s Kim Mi Rae took the bronze with 372.10 points.
China is aiming to sweep all eight gold medals in diving at the 2024 Olympics, an unprecedented feat. Quan’s gold is the fifth for China in diving and the first individual gold of the games. Prior to this, China had already clinched victories in all four team events during the first week of the Olympics.
This exceptional performance by Quan Hongchan highlights her as a dominant force in the world of diving and a key player in China’s continued success at the Olympic Games.
