New ‘John Wick’ Series in Production: ‘John Wick: Under the High Table’
The “John Wick” franchise continues to expand with a new series titled “John Wick: Under the High Table,” set after the events of “John Wick: Chapter 4.”
According to Entertainment Weekly on August 5, Keanu Reeves will serve as an executive producer for the series alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. Chad Stahelski will oversee the production and direct the first episode, with the script written by Robert Levine. It is currently unclear if Reeves will reprise his iconic role, given that John Wick died at the end of “Chapter 4,” followed by a scene where Winston (Ian McShane) and Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) visit his grave.
Producers revealed that “Under the High Table” will introduce a new group of characters striving to make a name for themselves in the underworld while some familiar faces remain loyal to the old order. The series aims to usher the John Wick universe into a new era.
This project is the second television series set in the John Wick universe, following the prequel “The Continental.” While Keanu Reeves’ appearance in the new series is uncertain, he is confirmed to appear in the spin-off film “John Wick Presents: Ballerina,” starring Ana de Armas, slated for release in 2025. Another spin-off focusing on the blind assassin Caine (played by Donnie Yen) is also in the works.
The “John Wick” franchise, starring Keanu Reeves, began with its first film in 2014 and has grossed $587 million across its first three installments. The series follows the vengeful journey of the titular assassin after the death of his dog. Reeves’ portrayal, characterized by innovative and violent fight scenes and a cold demeanor, has solidified his standing in the action genre.
The series reached a global box office total of $1 billion in May 2023. Film critics from outlets like Wired and Polygon have praised the franchise for revitalizing the action genre with its unique style and execution.
