Sidewalk Collapse Traps Tourist in 8-Meter Deep Pit in Malaysia
An Indian woman has gone missing after falling into an 8-meter deep pit caused by an unexpected sidewalk collapse in the Dang Wangi area of Kuala Lumpur on August 23. The incident has caused significant alarm and drawn attention from both the local community and authorities.
At the time of the incident, the woman was walking on the sidewalk when the ground suddenly gave way, creating a dangerous pit. This unexpected collapse quickly turned into a deadly trap, and she fell into the hole before she could react.
Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene upon receiving the report. They cordoned off the area and began rescue operations using excavators and specialized equipment to clear debris from the pit. Despite their efforts, no signs of the victim have been found so far.
The woman, 48 years old, has been identified as a tourist from India. Local police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman declined to comment on the current status of the victim and the specific causes of the incident. However, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohamad Isa provided additional information about the situation. He mentioned that a strong current of water flows beneath the pit and it is possible that the victim may have been swept away.
Rusdi emphasized that the search needs to be conducted with utmost care and precision due to the involvement of public infrastructure. He warned that closing off pipes or sewers could cause flooding in the area and complicate the rescue efforts.
“We cannot act recklessly in this situation,” Rusdi stated. He also noted that a similar landslide had occurred at the same location last year, but it had been addressed. Currently, businesses in the area are advised to close temporarily for safety reasons to avoid potential risks.
Rusdi added that the woman had come to Malaysia with her husband and friends about two months ago for a vacation, and they were scheduled to return to India on August 24. This incident not only causes distress for the victim’s family but also raises concerns about the safety of public infrastructure in the area. Authorities continue to carry out rescue operations and investigations to determine the exact cause and ensure the safety of residents and tourists.
