The rural region of Extremadura, located in western Spain along the border with Portugal, is looking to attract digital nomads and remote workers by offering substantial financial incentives. Up to 200 individuals could receive grants totaling up to €15,000 (around $16,778) to relocate there for at least two years.

The initiative is part of a repopulation program called “Live in Ambroz,” named after the picturesque Ambroz Valley, which includes several rural villages struggling with population decline. The program aims to revitalize these areas by attracting new residents and workers. Extremadura is known for its natural beauty, historical landmarks, and affordable living costs. In comparison to Madrid, where rent for a one-bedroom apartment can exceed $1,500 a month, a similar rental in Badajoz, a province in Extremadura, costs around $531.
Economic and Cultural Highlights
Although Extremadura contributes less than 2% to Spain’s GDP, it has rich cultural and natural resources. The region is Spain’s second-largest wine producer and boasts the most freshwater coastlines in the country, offering beautiful inland beaches. The area is also rich in history, featuring medieval ruins, ancient Roman sites, and Moorish architecture, providing residents and visitors alike with a sense of stepping back in time.
Financial Incentives and Eligibility
The financial grants are intended to cover expenses such as housing, arable land, and other necessities to facilitate the arrival and settlement of new residents. The €15,000 grant is divided into multiple segments:
-Women and individuals under 30 who move to towns with fewer than 5,000 residents will receive €10,000 (approximately $11,185).
-All other participants will receive €8,000 (about $8,947).
After two years, additional funds will be awarded: €5,000 (around $5,592) for the former group and €4,000 (about $4,473) for the latter.
Application Process
The application process is expected to begin in mid-September, with submissions made online through the Extremadura General Electronic Access Point. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
-They must not have lived in Extremadura in the last six months.
-They must be legal residents in Spain, which can include those holding a digital nomad visa.
-Applicants must work remotely in the tech industry.
