Greenwood Rescues Marseille with Late Goal in French League Draw
PARIS (AP) — Mason Greenwood’s timely strike secured a valuable point for Marseille as they drew 2-2 with Reims at the Vélodrome on Sunday. This goal marked Greenwood’s third in the French league this season.
Marseille initially took the lead through Amine Harit, but their defense struggled as Reims surged ahead with goals from Yaya Kader Fofana and Sergio Akieme. Greenwood, who made headlines with a controversial summer transfer from Manchester United, had previously scored twice in his Marseille debut during a 5-1 victory over Brest.
In other league action, Strasbourg achieved their first win of the season with a high-energy 3-1 triumph over Rennes. Andrey Santos scored the opener for Strasbourg in the 23rd minute, followed by Emanuel Emegha who extended their lead early in the second half. Rennes’ Ludovic Blas managed a goal back, but a late own-goal by Christopher Wooh ensured Strasbourg’s victory. The win was a morale booster for Strasbourg’s fans, who had recently protested against the club’s management.
Nantes ended a frustrating 10-game winless streak at home with a 2-0 victory over newly promoted Auxerre at Stade de la Beaujoire. Nigerian forward Moses Simon scored a stunning solo goal in the 14th minute. Auxerre, despite several chances, couldn’t capitalize and their task was made harder when Ado Onaiwu was red-carded in the 52nd minute. Bahereba Guirassy added a second goal in stoppage time to secure the win.
Lens also secured a 2-0 win against Brest with an early goal from Jhoanner Chavez and an own-goal from Julien Le Cardinal. Lens had a player, Deiver Machado, sent off in the 88th minute.
In another match, Nice and Toulouse ended in a 1-1 draw on a pitch suffering from a fungal infection. American defender Mark McKenzie made his Toulouse debut following his transfer from Genk in Belgium.
