The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania is considered a little-known architectural wonder of the modern world. Built in 1984 to house the Romanian Parliament, the building features a blend of neoclassical architecture and socialist realism. It boasts 12 floors above ground, 8 underground floors and approximately 3,100 rooms, covering a total floor area of 365,000 square meters.
The huge construction costs, equivalent to 4 billion euros in 2020, make the Palace of Parliament the largest and most expensive civil administration building ever built. The project required freeing up one-fifth of Bucharest’s central area to accommodate the vast structure.
The building is known not only for its enormous scale and monumental architecture but also for its intricately decorated interior. Today, in addition to being the headquarters of the National Assembly, the building is also used as a museum and offices of several international organizations. Known for its ornate interior consisting of 23 sections, the palace houses two chambers of the Romanian Parliament: the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies along with three museums and an international conference center. The museums in the Palace are the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism (established in 2015) [ 8 ] and the Palace Museum. Although initially named the Republic House during construction, the palace became widely known as the People’s House after the Romanian Revolution of December 1989.
In popular culture, the Palace of the Parliaments has appeared in many films, most notably in the 2018 horror film The Nun, where it was used to represent the Vatican. Thanks to its beautiful modern architecture and outstanding style, the building increasingly attracts the curiosity of many people and urges them to come and admire it.
