Botswana discovers one of the world’s largest rough diamonds
On August 22, Lucara Diamond Corp., a Canadian mining company, announced the discovery of a massive 2,492-carat rough diamond in Botswana. This gem is one of the largest rough diamonds ever mined in the world. The diamond was unearthed at the Karowe mine, located in northeastern Botswana, about 430 km from the capital Gaborone.
Lucara has not disclosed the estimated value or provided specific details about the quality of this newly discovered diamond. The diamond was discovered using Lucara’s Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray technology.
In terms of carat weight, this diamond is not inferior to the largest diamond ever mined, the Cullinan, weighing 3,016.75 carats and discovered in South Africa in 1905.
