The mysterious fortress city resembles the Bagua formation
Located at the northeastern tip of Italy, the town of Palmanova captivates visitors with its ancient charm and unique architecture, reminiscent of the “Bagua formation”. Built in 1593 as a defense against the Ottoman Empire, Palmanova evolved over hundreds of years into one of Europe’s most notable examples of fortified military architecture.
Designed by talented architect Giulio Savourgnan, Palmanova is meticulously planned in the shape of a perfect nine-pointed star. Solid walls along with strategically placed auxiliary structures create an extremely solid defense system. Seen from above, Palmanova appears as a perfect maze, blocking enemies and making it almost impenetrable.
What makes Palmanova truly special is the harmonious combination of military architecture and urban planning. The town is divided into three main parts: the central area, the surrounding residential areas and the military structures outside. Eighteen radial streets lead to the central square, Piazza Grande, where important community activities take place. In the past, Palmanova was considered a “forbidden land” where no one wanted to live. It was not until the 17th century that prisoners held there became the town’s first residents.
Although Palmanova was designed to accommodate 20,000 people, today it only has about 6,000 residents. This sparsity contributes to a quiet atmosphere that helps preserve the town’s historical integrity. Palmanova has important historical value, having been the site of many wars and political upheavals. Despite these challenges, the town retains its original architecture, a testament to the resilience and indomitable spirit of the Italian people.
Palmanova attracts visitors with ancient architectural landmarks such as the Palazzo del Provveditore Generale (now the Town Hall and Military History Museum), many churches and the central square. Visitors can also experience re-enactments of historical battles or simply stroll along the cobblestone streets, immersing themselves in the town’s peaceful and elegant atmosphere. In 2017, Palmanova was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2018, this place continued to be recognized as “The most beautiful town in Italy”, attracting many tourists to explore its charming beauty.
With unique beauty and great historical value, Palmanova is a must-see destination for those who love to explore historical and architectural mysteries. Come to Palmanova to experience a different atmosphere and immerse yourself in the legendary story of the “Bagua squad” in the heart of Italy.
