Tragic Plane Crash in Thai Mangrove Forest Claims Nine Lives
A tragic aviation accident occurred in Thailand’s Chachoengsao province, claiming the lives of all nine individuals aboard the aircraft. The incident involved a small Cessna Caravan C208 (HS-SKR) plane, owned by a Thai company. The aircraft took off from Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok at 2:46 PM local time on August 22, with a scheduled destination at Ko Mai Chee Airport in Trat province, a popular location known for its coastal resorts. However, approximately 15 minutes after takeoff, the plane suddenly lost contact with Suvarnabhumi air traffic control.
The crash was reported at 3:18 PM in a remote area of Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao province, about 40 kilometers from Suvarnabhumi Airport. This region is characterized by dense mangrove forests with challenging and inaccessible terrain. The wreckage of the plane was discovered submerged in the mud within this forest. Investigators at the site also found personal items, including women’s clothing and a photograph of three foreign women, small but heart-wrenching reminders of the immense loss caused by the crash.
Preliminary reports indicate that there were nine people on board, including five Chinese passengers, two Thai passengers, and two Thai pilots. Despite the swift deployment of search and rescue teams to the crash site following the incident’s report, no trace of the victims had been found as of the evening of August 22. The rescue operation has faced significant challenges due to the crash site being located in a mangrove forest, where water levels can rise rapidly with the tide, especially near the Bang Pakong River’s estuary.
Bang Pakong police officers have stated that the rescue teams are working under extremely difficult conditions, not only due to the treacherous terrain but also because of the rising water levels, which severely impede access to and recovery of the plane’s wreckage. The high tide at the Bang Pakong estuary has made the search operation even more hazardous, requiring extreme caution and professionalism from the rescue teams.
