Tim Walz Nominated as Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate
Governor Walz receives nomination on the third day of the Democratic National Convention, sharing personal insights in his speech.
“It is the honor of my life to be nominated as the Democratic candidate for Vice President of the United States,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 21.
Governor Walz expressed his gratitude to Vice President Kamala Harris for inviting him to join the ticket and thanked President Joe Biden for “four years of bold, historic leadership.”
In his speech, Governor Walz recounted his childhood in Butte, Nebraska, a town of just 400 people, where he once served as a high school football coach. Walz reflected on how growing up in a small community taught him the importance of caring for and looking out for his neighbors, a lesson that instilled in him a deep sense of “responsibility to give back to society.”
The Minnesota Governor also spoke about his decision to join the National Guard just two days after his 17th birthday. “I am proud to have worn the uniform of our country for 24 years,” he said.
Turning to his family, Walz shared that he and his wife faced challenges with infertility, which led them to name their first daughter “Hope.” “Gwen, Hope, Gus—you are my whole world. I love you all,” Walz said, addressing his wife and two children.
At 60 years old, Governor Walz was not a prominent political figure until Harris selected him as her running mate. Walz comes from a humble background and leads a modest life, without owning a home and living off his salary.
Governor Walz also spent a significant portion of his speech praising Kamala Harris. “She has served as a prosecutor, Attorney General, Senator, and now as our Vice President, always fighting for the American people,” he said.
“No matter who you are, Kamala Harris will stand up and fight for your freedom, because that’s what we all want for ourselves and for our neighbors,” Walz emphasized.
