Located about 30 kilometers southeast of Suzhou, China, Zhuzhuang boasts a history of more than 900 years, with about 60% of the architecture dating from 1368 to 1911. Once a trading center Bustling on the waterway connecting Suzhou and Hangzhou, this ancient town attracted many merchants and artisans.
True to its reputation, Chu Trang captivates with its well-preserved ancient architecture, charming cobblestone streets, and traditional wooden houses. Although these houses appear modest on the outside, they reveal spacious interiors, which can include gardens, fish ponds, and even more than 100 rooms for large, multi-generational families.
Connected by a network of canals, Chu Trang is mainly traveled by boat, adding to its ancient charm. After strolling through the ancient streets, visitors can buy tickets to take a scenic boat ride along the canals. Be sure to admire the famous twin bridges, Shide and Yong’an, famous for their arch-shaped designs that beautifully reflect on the water, creating a unique lock-shaped silhouette.
Upon entering Zhouzhuang, visitors will be greeted by a wooden stage decorated with embroidered curtains and red lanterns, creating a classic Chinese atmosphere. Here, you can enjoy various traditional performances, including opera and drama, with performers in vibrant costumes showing off graceful movements.
The ancient town’s rich history is also evident in its many pagodas and temples. Notable sites include the intricately designed Chengxu Temple, dedicated to Taoist beliefs, and Quanfu Temple, showcasing traditional architectural styles.
A visit to Chu Trang would not be complete without sampling the delicious local dishes. Whether dining at famous restaurants or street food stalls, you can enjoy regional specialties such as baozi (steamed dumplings), braised fish, stinky tofu and wonton noodles.
